In five sessions, over six weeks, we will explore everything from expressive line work to bold watercolour washes. This course is all about letting go of perfection and learning to capture the world with a loose, energetic style. Please read below for more information:
This online course is designed to help you find your creative flow and build confidence with ink and watercolours. Join Colin and me for a practical, live online series of workshops where we focus on energy, expression, and the joy of sketching without the stress of perfection.
Week 1, 2nd June: The beauty of the loose line. Focus on letting go of perfection.
Week 2, 9th June: Sighting your perspective. Learn to see angles naturally without complex math.
We will have a break on the 16th June
Week 3, 23rd June: Capturing nature and textures. Master loose pen work and layering for trees and water.
Week 4, 30th June: Editing and simplicity. Learn what to leave out to make your sketches pop.
Week 5, 7th June: Bold colour and atmosphere. Use big washes to create light and shadow.
This is a live, online course over a period of 6 weeks. We meet every week for a 90 minute session where we demo the techniques and you sketch along with us.
Live sessions. We go live at 19:30 - 21:00 BST (11:30 PDT, 14:30 EST) every Tuesday via Google Meets (no download necessary, you can access the workshop via your browser).
Preparation. We will send out the meeting link and the reference photos the day before the lesson via our WhatsApp group.
Recordings. If you miss a session, don't worry. Each lesson is recorded and will be available for you to watch for one week after the live date. These recordings are private and must not be shared outside of our group.
Feedback. Every Monday, Colin and Toby will meet privately to review everyone's submissions. We will record our chat and post a link in the WhatsApp group afterward. This is not a live call, so there’s no need to join, just watch the recording at your convenience to see all the feedback!
To get the most out of the course, you will need to join our private WhatsApp group. This is a brilliant space to share your work and stay inspired. On our dedicated prep and feedback days, Colin and I will be in the group to look at your trials and offer encouraging, practical advice to help you improve.
We want to keep things simple and fair for everyone. You can receive a full refund up to one week before the term starts; after that point, refunds are not guaranteed and are at our discretion. Once the course is underway, we cannot offer refunds for missed lessons. However, you will have access to the recording of each session for one week, so you can still catch up on anything you miss.
If we have to cancel a session and it cannot be rescheduled, we will provide a pro-rata refund for that week. Please note that if either Colin or Toby is unable to attend, the session will still go ahead as planned with the other instructor. Finally, as this is a group environment, we expect everyone to be kind to one another. We reserve the right to remove any participant without a refund if we feel this standard of conduct isn’t followed.
